Kirlyn Joseph

Director of Special Projects

Bio

Kirlyn Joseph grew up in Jamaica, Queens and has dedicated her career to serving her community. Ms. Joseph received her degree in Political Science from the College of The Holy Cross and then enrolled in Boston College Law School. After graduating with her law degree in 1990, Ms. Joseph came back to Queens, NY and began her career at the Legal Aid Society as an attorney in the Queens County Criminal Defense Division.  In 1997 she joined Queens Defenders and now serves as the Director of Special Projects and leads their Family Law Practice. Over her 30+ year career as an attorney, Ms. Joseph has developed specializations in criminal law, juvenile delinquency and raise the age cases, as well as family law, and has extensive experience representing adults and children involved in the criminal, family, and juvenile justice systems. Ms. Joseph was instrumental in launching Queens Defenders’ youth programs which include the Youth Justice Court Program, Youth Mentorship Program, as well as various community-based programs designed to education youth and adults on their rights and the criminal, family, and immigration court systems.
Anthony Martone

Director of Felony Youth Defense Unit

Bio

Anthony was raised in Queens, New York. Upon graduating from New York Law School in 1987, he immediately started his public defender career by accepting a position as a staff attorney with The Legal Aid Society, Criminal Defense Division in Queens. He remained there until 1995 when he started his private practice in Queens concentrating almost exclusively in criminal defense. During his career in private practice, he continued representing indigent clients in Queens. In 2014, he became an attorney with Queens Defenders. He went on to become a Supervising Attorney, and shortly thereafter, The Director of Felony Youth Defense Unit representing and overseeing all youth, 18 and under, who have been charged with a felony. As Director, he helped start an internship-employment program for clients currently being accused of a crime. His 30-plus years in the criminal defense field have afforded him extensive and vast experience in all aspects of criminal defense including extensive trial litigation. 
Lisa Saltzman

Director of Training

Bio

Lisa has worked for Queens Defenders for 24 years. She is a frequent lecturer at the Queens County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, and the New York State Defender Association, speaking on various criminal law topics. She is part of the training unit at Queens Defenders, teaching senior as well as newly admitted attorneys how to handle all aspects of criminal cases. She second seats and supervises the DWI trials conducted in the office and was instrumental in developing the offices’ DMV refusal hearing practice. She is an adjunct professor at Seton Hall Law School where she teaches a course called Persuasion and Advocacy. She has also taught as an Adjunct Professor at Cardozo Law School teaching trial skills during their Intensive Trial Advocacy Program. She has participated in many NITA law school programs and competitions around the region as a teacher, evaluator, and judge. She is a member of the National College for DUI Defense (NCDD) and graduate of their summer session held at Harvard Law School. In 2019, she received the NCDD National Public Defender of the Year Award for her dedication and work the field of DWI defense. She is a graduate of the NHTSA DWI Detection and SFST Practitioner Course. She is a co-chair of the NCDD Public Defender Taskforce which aims at teaching public defenders around the country, as well as connecting them to resources in defending DWI cases. She received her B.A. from New York University majoring in Political Science and Economics and her J.D. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

Josh is originally from Queens and Long Island, New York. He received a B.A. in Latin American Studies at The George Washington University and his J.D. from CUNY Law School. Upon graduation from law school, Josh started his criminal-immigration career at the Immigrant Defense Project. His immigration experience also includes working with students and visitors as he managed large scale student exchange programs for the US and Brazilian Governments. In 2018, Josh joined Queens Defenders as Supervisor of the Immigration Department. Josh speaks Spanish and Portuguese.

Prior to coming to Queens Defenders Chris worked as an attorney for two years at the Staten Island Defenders Services office. During Law School he interned at the Legal Aid Society in Brooklyn.
