When the COVID-19 pandemic was at its height in New York City during the spring of 2020, Queens Defenders responded by launching a food delivery service to help families impacted by domestic violence access healthy food and essential supplies. What started as an initiative to provide food to 12 families has now grown into an accredited Food Bank of NYC Food Pantry that reaches hundreds of families every week.
In its first year, the Queens Defenders Food Pantry reached over 50,000 residents of our borough's hardest-hit communities.
To keep up with the demand for this service, we expanded our operation from the lower level of the Rockaway Community Justice Center to a new 2,500-square-foot Food Distribution Hub. We now have weekly food distributions in both Far Rockaway and Jamaica.
